January and February weeks

Oh wow! I have got to be better than I have been- I do have lots of pictures and notes from our last month of classes. We have two friends in our afternoon class- N and G. We hope that they are enjoying their time with us now :)

Week 17- Tuesday the 6th- we had class on being honest and what honesty is. Hopefully they remember as we talked about telling the truth. We also worked with the letter "L" and started "Humpty Dumpty". Wednesday the 7th we discussed the Ugly Duckling and how he turned into a beautiful swan. We made "ugly duckling" cookies and made fun masks. Thursday the 8th was #6 day. We practiced printing 6 and counting up to six in English and Spanish.

Week 18- Tuesday the 13th and Thursday the 15th, we talked all about the 5 senses. We graphed what we liked better- sweet or salty foods. My morning liked salty and my afternoon liked the sweets. We discovered what it would be like not being able to see. We played musical instruments to explore sound and found that our noses can smell different things. For touch, we talked about different things we can touch and how they feel to us. We also worked on the letter "M" and how it is MMMM good.
Wednesday the 14th we had class all about dinosaurs. Our friend G brought his dinosaur puzzle that we did as a class. We read some dinosaur books and colored some worksheets all about the dinosaurs. This is a fun subject with the kids.

Week 19- Tuesday the 20th we had our BLUE day. We sang a song about blue and colored in our blue book and made a basket full of blueberries. We also started working on the letter "N" with our friend Nancy Nurse. Wednesday the 21st we had a day devoted to exercise and how to work our bodies. We played games in the backyard as well as streching inside. We had a healthy snack of fruit and gatorade. Thursday class was cancelled because I got a flu bug.

Week 20- Monday the 26th was Rectangle day. We traced and found rectangles EVERYWHERE! We worked on how a rectangle has four sides- two sides being longer than the others. Our letter of the week was "O" and we practiced its two sounds- "O" saying its name as well as what we say when a doctor asks us to open our mouth. Tuesday the 27th was our Opposites day of hot and cold. We talked about things that were hot and cold and then felt washcloths that were hot and cold.
Wednesday the 28th was our Little Red Hen day. We learned how to make bread. We felt and looked at wheat berries, watched them being ground into flour and then helped to make the flour bread! I wish I could have taken more pictures- I was too busy making the bread with the boys :( Sorry! But they kneaded their own loaves and I baked them to take home. Yummy fresh bread- plus we read the story and talked about each step.

Week 21- Tuesday the 3rd of February- we worked on the number 7 as well as "P". We popped like popcorn and practiced counting and tracing the number 7. Wednesday the 4th was out Chinese New Year day. We read a story about the zodiac calendar and how the animals were chosen for each year. We also made a dragon kite and ate sweet & sour chicken with orange slices and an eggroll. The boys didn't like it so much :( Thursday the 5th was yellow day. We put corn kernals on our yellow sheet, colored in our yellow books and talked about things that are yellow.

Week 22- Tuesday the 10th was our day all about pink and hearts. We made pink paint by mixing red and white fingerpaint and then we painted our hearts. We also colored in our pink books and practiced tracing hearts. They are harder than we thought! We also started on "Q" - we practiced how "Q" and "U" are married because they are always together! Wednesday the 11th was our day all about dental health. We practiced scrubbing with a big "toothbrush" around the gums and the tooth on both sides. We read "Moose's loose tooth" and how they will be losing theirs soon. We also ate healthy snacks- crackers and apple slices and water.
Thursday the 12th was our valentines party. We made sure our classwork was done before we got to party. We read three stories about valentines. Next, we made our valentine frames for our families then decorate a cookie. Afterwards, we passed out our valentines for each other. I think all the students loved doing something for each other. Our make up day was on Friday the 13th. We talked about getting along with our friends. We played outside together and after snacks, we divided into teams and worked together on puzzles. They really worked well together! We also practiced all our letters we have learned so far. They are doing very well.

That evening we had our literacy night. I am sorry that it was a busy weekend- not only was it valentines but it was also a three day weekend! We had a few families come and share their family traditions and bring yummy treats to share. The kids then made bookmarks to take home to put in their favorite books. I hope all who came had fun and we missed everyone who was not able to come!
