Friday March 11th- Field trip to Bonnie Springs

We traveled up to Bonnie Springs for a fun beautiful morning. We first heard from Sheriff Joe about gun safety and then we went over to the petting zoo. Not much petting- just feeding and looking. After our visit there, we headed 5 miles down the way to a beautiful overlook of Redrock and ate our lunches. It was a great time to spend with the kids out of the classroom- I hope that they enjoyed it!

Thursday March 10th- Black

For name practice, we printed our names and then we did clothespin name practice- putting our letters in our names in order. After we got done with that, each child had to tell me the letters of their names. Upstairs, I had beads, foam blocks and puppets ready for play time. The class also explored our new class pets- our caterpillars! We are going to watch them turn into butterflies and what a fun experience it is!!
We sing “rise and shine” and then we go into our Pledge. I had Payten come do color and shape flash cards with the class to review and then we went into calendar time. For calendar time, we review the date and what it was yesterday and tomorrow. Each student repeats the date with me and then we count to 15 in English and then in Spanish to 9. We sing the days of the week and I have the students repeat the months of the year with me. Payten helped with our weather time and we boogied to the alphabet. I had the students follow me and say the letters that we have learned so far this year. We have learned 20 letters and only 6 more to go! We also sang to Hickory, Dickory Dock- out nursery rhyme of the month. Payten picked our wiggle song and we wiggled our bodies. Afterwards, we came to the table to eat. Our pretzels were very entertaining today- we made them into people and they were playing around. After our snack time, the students explored the variety of books we have in our library and then Payten shared her show and tell.
To review our nursery rhyme, we made our Hickory Dickory Dock books. First each child had to write their names and then they colored all the pages one at a time. Then we brought them finished to the floor and we looked at the pictures as we sang to the song again.
For black day, we explored our clothes to see who had dressed for the day and all of us had black on- thanks parents! We talked about different things around our world that are the color black. We read our black poem and then danced to the song. At the table, I had prepared each child’s color black book. They each had to write their names and then cut their black pictures out. I helped them with gluing and then each of them had to draw an item that was black- I got many black ponies drawn :) Then once completed we came down to the floor so that I could prep for our black worksheet that will go into our binders. We explored books and then came back to finish the page- first by writing our names and then coloring with our black crayons. Some of us are speedy artists and some of us are more detail oriented. :) We took so long that we didn’t have any letter time but each child got to pick which black item they wanted to get stamped with – a spider, black cat or bat.

Wednesday March 9th- Number 16

For our practice time, we traced and wrote the letter G in upper and lower case then stamped some G’s on the back of our worksheet in green. Upstairs we played with food, babies and beads. After play time, we had Zach help us with the remainder of letters we have learned. We counted up to 31 in our ghostly voices and then to 16 in Spanish as I taught them 16 prior to counting. We blasted off into unchartered areas of space- you should hear some of these places that they land after we do our blastoff counting- too funny and creative! Our class helped with weather time and then sight words were reviewed. We boogied to the alphabet and then we sang our G song while making our sign for the letter.
We wiggled, ate, explored books and checked out all of Zach’s Lego Star Wars characters.
For #16, I explained that the number 16 is made with a 1 and a 6 not a 6 and a 1. We reviewed how to make each number in the air and then we counted up to 16 in English and Spanish. At table time, each child practiced the number 16 and then had to finds 16 hidden socks in a picture. I had each child count them and point to each one as they did. This is an area that can we worked on at home. For the next activity, I worked with 3 children at a time as the others explored our library. Each child had to put 16 candles on a birthday cake. They all first colored it and then I worked with them one candle at a time. I have a few students who are more anxious with doing their own work then others so I wanted to do smaller groups so that I could keep an eye on them. After we all finished our 16 candles we went straight into our G practice which was growing G words in Gilbert’s goofy garden. We child had to cut out 6 pictures and the title then pick out the 4 “G” words then “plant” them on the brown paper. Downstairs in line, we practiced counting in English and Spanish and our G sounds.

Tuesday March 8th- Number 9

Downstairs we worked on our scissor skills and then headed up to play with cars, trucks and Mr. Potato Head. I practiced the number 9 with each student during this time. Payten was our star and she helped with reviewing colors and shapes. During calendar time, we counted to 15 and to 9 in Spanish. I taught them the number prior to counting. We sang to the days of the week song and practiced our months of the year. I introduced September to the class today with the other months. Payten helped us with weather time and then we boogied to the alphabet. Because we didn’t have a letter to review we went right into wiggle time. After we wiggled, ate our snacks and explored our books, we went into our lesson on the number 9.
I started with reading our number 9 poem and then we practiced counting up to 9 in English and Spanish. At the table, we finished our number 9 worksheet by putting 9 frogs in the jar. Then we added 9 stamps to the 9 envelope worksheet that we colored. Each child had to practice writing their names on both sheets by practicing on top of their highlighted names that I had written for them.
For letter time, we boogied again to the alphabet and reviewed the letters that we have learned so far this year. Then I read Chicka, Chicka Boom Boom for our letter review. Such a fun book!

Monday March 7th- gardens

Downstairs we started the week with scissor practice- we are gradually getting harder worksheets to cut. Upstairs I had cars, trucks and tinker toys to play with. I practiced the letter G with each child individually and they finished their shape tracing and coloring of G worksheet. Zach was our star and he helped the students to review half of the letters we have learned so far. For calendar time, we counted in grumpy voices up to 31 and in Spanish to 15. Blastoff counting was followed with singing the days of the week and Macarena months. They are so cute when they do the dance- you should have them show you it. Zach helped us in weather time and we reviewed our sight words. We learned the sight words-Nan. She is a bird in some of the stories. We did our alphabet boogie to get ready for letter time. On Friday I had introduced the letter G since our class was shortened this week because of the field trip. We continued to practice the letter G and its two sounds and its sign as well. After letter time, we wiggled, ate our snack of teddy grahams and cheese sticks and then we had some book time. Zach shared his show and tell and then we started to discuss gardens. We talked about different plants that can be grown in a garden from flowers to fruits and vegetables. I had a song about gardeners and all the kind of protection they have to use in the garden. From gloves, hat and sunglasses to help them stay protected in the sun. I had a variety of different seeds of different vegetables and we explored them. After our floor time, we went up to the table and counted flowers in a garden.
For G time, I read our G story and we completed coloring a G worksheet with Gilbert Goat. Each student got the lowercase g stamp on their hand if they wanted it and we reviewed the two sounds of G.

Friday March 4th- Patience

For our awesome Friday, we started with a variety of letters to practice at the table downstairs. Upstairs I had big plastic blocks and Mr. potato head ready to play with. During our play time, I measured each child’s height and asked them a few questions for our March all about me page for our binders. Nya helped us review our colors and shapes. We practiced counting and singing our songs at calendar time. I decided to start working on the letter G since we would only be working on it two days next week due to our field trip on Friday. We met Gilbert Goat who likes to play his guitar. He also likes to work in his garden. G is a sneaky letter though because he has two sounds- “ga” like in grapes and “ja” like in giraffe. We sang our song as we practiced our sign to the letter G. I read some words that start with the letter g- reviewing the two different sounds throughout.
We wiggled, ate our snack and then had some reading time with Ms. Alisha-I read the kids some of the books they asked me to. This took up some time from the lesson, but they loved reading the stories :) Nya shared her show and tell quickly and we practiced our poem for the month. We finished our March All about me pages and then came to the carpets for lesson time. Our class discussed patience and when we have to wait and be patient in life. After that, we went back to the table to complete a patience book about seeds and how we have to wait for them to grow but the payoff is beautiful!
For letter review, we had to match broken letter Easter eggs. At first each child was able to find their own letter- upper and lowercase and then tell me the letter and the sound. Then I gave each of them a letter to find and they had to find it out of the letters given. They did a great job with this activity! I gave them G stamp in green and we were finished for the week.

Thursday March 3rd- Opposites: big & little

We started our day with clothespin name practice- putting our letters in our names in order and then heading upstairs to play with puzzles, big plastic blocks and Star Wars toys. During our playtime, I measured their heights and asked them some questions from our March All about me page. Claire helped us practice our colors and shapes with our flashcards. After our review, we counted to 15- counting like turtles nice and slow to go along with our T day. We also counted in Spanish and sang our days of the week song. Our class helped with weather time and we boogied with the alphabet song. We tapped our toes as we sang our T song and made the T sign. We wiggled and had a fun snack- Big and little oreos to go along with our theme- the opposites: big and little. Thanks Ann & Claire!
We practiced our new nursery rhyme again after Claire showed us her show and tell. We talked about our theme the opposites big and little. I showed the students a variety of different items that they had to tell me which was the big one and the little one. Then we practiced making our bodies big and little. I let each child come to the front and they could become big or little and then the other students had to tell what they were trying to be. They seemed to like becoming big and then little :) For our art time, we painted with big and little paintbrushes with the water colors. Each student made a piece of art! Then I had each of them paint their T worksheet and we practiced our T sound while we painted. We cleaned up and then got our t stamp and we were done with our opposites day.

Wednesday March 2nd- Seeds

We started our week back to school after a long break with printing our names- once on the dotted practice then once by ourselves. Then each student did their clothespin name practice. Upstairs I had little legos, puzzles and transformers ready for play time. Nya was our star and helped with letter review after we cleaned up and said our Pledge. I was excited to share all the changes we had had in classroom since our last class. All of the decorations were different and our calendar showed us a new month- March! We counted to twenty, to 15 in Spanish and did some blastoff counting. After that we sang the Days of the week and danced along to our Macarena months. I showed them that March is a longer month with 31 days instead of the 28 or 30 days in other months. The class helped with weather time and we started to learn our new sight word: on. This one seemed simpler for the kids to learn and we will be now learning a sight word a week. All of these words are in their folders for review at home. We did a letter review of all of the letters that we have learned so far this year. After we wiggled, we ate our snacks and explored all of our new March books. Nya shared her show and tell and I started to teach our new poem for the month- about a caterpillar. This is also in each student’s folder for review at home.
Our theme for the month is All about nature. I wanted to start with seeds so that we can see the process of the seeds and their growth. To start our lesson, I read the Eric Carle book “The Tiny Seed”. We talked about what seeds need to grow- sunlight, water and soil. We did a role play of a seed growing towards the sun with our bodies- they really grew well! I showed the students some different seeds and then we started growing some seeds ourselves. I had some beans soaking and we made our own planter bags with paper towels, a ziplock bag, spray bottle to get our towel wet and 3 seeds. I taped them to the window so that we can chart our progress. After we planted our beans, I read the book “A sunflower grows up” and we talked about how seeds work and we started one more science project with our seeds. This one required soil so each child helped with adding soil and wheat kernels so we can see wheat grass grow. They can grow above the ground so the students can see the roots and the grass as they grow in class. We practiced and reviewed our sight words again before we left for the day.

Tuesday March 1st- Restaurants and grocery stores

I wanted to do something different so we practiced tracing on dotted lines. We made zigzag lines and they did well- we will continue to work on these opposite of scissor and name tracing days. Upstairs I had food, babies and beads ready for them to play with to go along with our restaurant and grocery store theme.
Claire was our star and she helped with our color and shape review. Thursday we will do flash cards of different items and their shapes. I was excited to share the first day of March with my three year olds. We have our classroom decorated with shamrocks and our calendar has changed as well. We counted up to 15- adding extra practice on numbers 10-15. We also counted to 8 in Spanish. Days of the week song was next followed by months of the year practice up to August. I showed the students that our calendar goes to 31 days instead of the 28 that was in February. I also highlighted St. Patrick’s Day holiday card on our calendar. Claire and the class helped with our weather song and then we did our alphabet boogie. I introduced our new letter of the week- T and Timmy Tiger. He likes to watch television and he when we gets tired he gets ready for bed by brushing his teeth with a toothbrush and toothpaste. We all practice the letter T by tapping our toes and making the T sound. We also practiced with our T song while we made the T sign. The T sign is making a fist with your thumb in between your pointer and middle finger. I read some words that begin with the letter T- we also noticed that Tyler’s name starts with T and Garrett’s name ends with T. We all did some wiggle song time and then we had our snack. We didn’t have much time to browse the books because we were listening to our Nursery Rhymes that we have learned this year and not eating our snacks :) Claire brought a book for her show and tell that I read to the class- Never take a shark to the dentist and other things not to do. It was a cute book and the kids liked it!
Since I had the class already seated, we started to review our Nursery Rhyme of the month- Hickory, Dickory, Dock. We first did a teacher repeat practice and then we listened to the song following my actions. We were catching on quickly. After that, we got right into our lesson on restaurants and grocery stores. I asked the students what some of their favorite places to eat were- we got on the tangent of ice cream and what kinds that we liked. I had to refocus and talk about food places that we eat dinner or even lunch at. McDonalds, Panera Bread, Panda Express were some of the favorites. I then talked about our theme for the month- All around the town. I had a small story that I shared about different places that we will be discussing throughout the month. After that, I talked about grocery stores and where moms buy our food. I got from many students that they don’t like the grocery stores because they take too long and are boring. We talked about what kinds of foods are at the grocery store and how important they are for us.
I then showed a picture of a chef and they knew what the chef does- I sang a song to go along with a chef and they we imagined that we were chefs and we had our own restaurants. Each child was given a restaurant menu and they had to add what kinds of food they would have at their restaurant. Each child practiced their names at the top and then they went to work. I had each child share their menu with the class and the items they would serve.
For letter time, we twirled for singing the letter T song but all we got was dizzy- especially me! Then we read our T story about Tilly Turtle went to tea and she broke the table and they made her into the table. We had some extra time so we sang the Do as I’m doing song while we tapped our toes and twisted our bodies. Then with one last request, we did the famous I wiggle song to end our day!
