Monday March 21st- Frogs & their life cycle
Downstairs we did a complicated scissor practice and all of the students did wonderful! Upstairs I had foam blocks, Lincoln logs and nuts and bolts for the kids. The foam blocks got turned into weapons and Nya ended up playing with the baby dolls. I had each student come and work on the letter W with me. I wanted to make sure that they were printing it correctly.
Campbell is my star this week so he helped me with our letter review. Calendar time had a bit of a change-we are now in Spring (even though our weather today doesn’t seem like it!) We reviewed our date, counted as we wiggled up to 31. We got tired from all the wiggling so we calmed down for Spanish and blastoff counting. We sang and danced to Days of the week and months of the year songs and then Campbell helped with weather time. We learned a new sight word- sat and we reviewed our sight words we have learned so far. We did our alphabet boogie and then we met Wally Walrus who watches worms and loves to use his wagon and eat watermelon. We put our three middle fingers in the air to make the sign of the letter W and the sound is “wa” like in water or walrus. We learned some other words that start with the W and then we did our wiggle song with Campbell. He picked one from our Halloween CD- he has a great memory! He also brought us a yummy snack to share and we explored the books for just a bit before we had Campbell’s show and tell.
Our lesson was on frogs and their life cycle. I read a book all about the life cycle of a frog and it had great pictures to show each step of the metamorphosis of the frog. After we read the story, we review the different stages of the frog’s life. At the table, we created our own frog pond. Each student cut out the picture strip off the bottom and then colored their ponds. After that, we put the strip in and I reviewed the life cycle with each student. Following this activity, we cut out 5 pictures of different sized frogs. After each child was finished they took their frog picture to their carpets and had to arrange them in order from smallest to largest. We have improved in this area as well. I sent home a review of 4 different pictures of the life of a frog and for extra practice your child can cut the pictures out and glue them in order on the construction paper that was sent home as well.
We had some book time because all the students finished the frog sizing at different times. Once we were all completed, we finished our W worksheet by coloring the picture. I also had each child print the sight word “sat” in their folders. We finished class with our W story- Worm’s wagon and how all the friends wanted a ride and it got too heavy that it broke. All the friends worked together to fix it and then they gave Worm a ride. I stamped their hands with a W as we reviewed the W sound and sign and we were done for the day!
