Wednesday February 2nd- Groundhog Day

For Wednesday, we practiced our names- tracing them and then writing them on our own. Upstairs I had transformers, wooden blocks and beads out for playing with. Benjamin continued to help us with our letter review. It was a great day because we started learning about February! We reviewed all of the month’s holidays and counted up to 20, in Spanish up to 12 and we blasted off 10-1! After days of the week, months of the year and weather time, we reviewed all of our sight words. We wiggled and ate our snacks then explored all of our new February books in the library area. For our lesson today, we learned all about Groundhog Day. I explained what happens on Groundhog day- if the groundhog sees his shadow, then we gets scared and goes back to bed for 6 more weeks of winter. If he doesn’t then he stays awake and spring is on its way. We looked at some of the books that I have about Groundhog Day and then we went down stairs to see if Phil saw his shadow this morning. He didn’t so spring is on its way! Upstairs we learned our new poem of the month about Mr. Groundhog- please practice this one with them at home because it is a bit longer than the others we have had in the past. At the table, we did a bit of printing practice in our little groundhog books. We did a craft with Mr. Groundhog popping out of a cup. They did a great job coloring and cutting out the grass. They really liked the end result and had fun popping Mr. Groundhog in and out of his “hole”.
