Mon Feb 6th- farm equipment & buildings

Mondays always start with name practice- first and last and then they were on to playing with little legos, little people and magnets. I pulled the students aside to work on our letter N and our sight words- it and in and stamped their hands with these two new words. During this time, I also measured their height and asking them the questions for their All about me page for February. Gage helped with reviewing all of our letters we have learned so far. We counted up to 20 shaking like a “n”oodle, in Spanish to 12 and blastoff counting 10-1. We went straight in to calendar time with days of the week and months of the year songs as well as reviewing the date. Weather time was followed with practicing our new sight words- it and in. They seem to be doing well with the sight words. Please practice them with your child though at home. They are all listed in their folders except for the characters names that we are learning as well. Before we got into letter time, we did our alphabet boogie and then we learned more about the letter N. Our letter friend this week is Nancy Nurse who likes necklaces, and reading the newspaper. We also practiced the sound and sign for the letter N. I read words that beginning with the N so that the students can recognize words they know that start with N. I also taught that the sounds of M and N are different- M is made with a closed mouth and N’s sound brings the tongue to the back of the front teeth or top of the mouth. After letter practice, we did our wiggle song, snack and book time and then Ella and Gage shared their show and tells with the class. We completed our All about me February pages- they are growing in so many areas and it is exciting to see their progression. For our lesson, we started with the new monthly theme of all about the farm. I have a big poster of the farm and I explained the different areas of a farm- the farm house, pig sty, stables and silo and what each are used for. I also talked about the different equipment used tractors and combine. I read the book “Lego City: Work this farm!” which talked about all the aspects of the farm that we discussed. I also talked about a time when there were no machines and how they had to use horses and man power. I talked about the hand tools they had to use- the pitchfork, shovel and hoe for farming. After that we went to the table and did a patterning activity with these three tools. For letter time, we completed our N practice sheets by coloring the picture above our practice area. I reviewed the sound and sign with each child as I went around and gave them the letter stamp on their hands. We also read the N story- The Nicest Newt who we found can be sometimes naughty. We ended the day with reviewing our new sight words and we were finished!
