Thurs Jan 26th- Opposites: hot & cold
Thursday started with scissor practice and then the students moved over to play with the duplos blocks, babies, lacing cards and magnetic shapes. I pulled each child aside to work on the letter O. It was a simple letter since we only had to draw a circle to complete the letter.
Molly helped with our circle time duties again and we did calendar time and letter practice time. We counted to 20 moving our heads like an owl from one side to another because I thought them that owl’s eyes cannot see to the side they have to move their head to see. After we wiggled, we had a fun snack. Molly shared her show and tell and we were ready for our lesson.
For the opposites hot and cold, we sang the opposites song and I explained that opposites are two totally different things. First we talked about cold- how it makes us feel, what kinds of things are cold, how we have to dress in the cold, what kinds of activities can you do in the cold and what do we eat that is cold. At the table, I had baby ice cream cones ready for each child to eat. Afterwards, I read Clifford’s first snow day with the class and we talked about all the cold things that we saw in the story.
For hot, we talked about the same questions from our cold lesson- how it makes us feel, things that are hot, how we have to dress, what we do in the heat and foods that are hot. I had made hot chocolate for the students but let it sit out a bit so it wasn’t too “hot”.
At the table, we colored a worksheet that shows a thermometer and how the ice cube is whole in the cold and then the ice cube melts when the temperature is hot. I explained what thermometers are and what they accomplish.
For O time, I started by reading Olivia takes a trip and then we practiced our sounds for the letter O. I brought the kids back to the table to color their O and owl. After we finished that, each child got their O stamp and then I finished the day with reading Olivia trains her cat. Once we completed the story we lined up and we finished for the week!
