Wed Jan 25th- places people go for health care

We started our awesome Wednesday by practicing our first and last names two times each and then heading over to play with foam blocks, the train set and nuts and bolts. I pulled the students aside to work on the letter X and the sight word- meet- printing them and then getting stamps on them on our hands. Brooklyn helped with circle time- reviewing our shapes and colors. I let our star pick the action we did with counting to 31- we ended up doing a funky dance. We blasted off with counting 10 to 1 and then we reviewed our date. The class sang days of the week, months of the year and our winter song. Brooklyn dressed our weather friend and we reviewed our new little letter X! I like the letter X because it combines the sounds of K and s together. I have a story of how to remember the sign of the letter X. It looks like a hook and I tell the students about Captain Hook and how he finds the X on the treasure map. Hopefully they can remember this one. We sing our X song while making our sign. We had our wiggle time, snacks, library time and then show and tell with Brooklyn. Then we were on to talking about health care- I discussed where they go when they need to get feeling better or just for a healthy check up. First thing we need to do is take care of our bodies so that we can stay healthy. I had them do some exercises with me to demonstrate how to exercise. We also discussed brushing our teeth, keeping clean, exercising, eating good foods- not a lot of sugar, and getting a good night’s rest. I then gave them a homework challenge to work on these at home. If they complete the project, they can pick a prize out of my prize drawer. For the rest of our lesson we talked about doctors and how they can help us- we can find them in a few different places- in their offices or at the hospital. Doctor’s offices are where we need to go when we are sick or to have a checkup. The hospital is the place to go to receive medical attention that is more serious- there we can get broken bones fixed or major illnesses taken care of. There are lots of doctors and nurses at a hospital. The dentist office is a place we go to have our teeth taken care of. It is important to brush and floss daily. I asked how many have been to the dentist and how many have had x-rays taken. We talked about fillings and caps on your teeth and how to avoid them. For letter time, we practiced our sign and sound for the letter X and then went to the table to color our page from earlier. We practiced our sight words and reviewed the others from weeks past. At the door we practiced our names and we walked over to the park for some fun there!
