Wed Jan 18th- places people work
Students started with name practice- first and last and then went over to play with cars and trucks, links, counting blocks and little legos. I was pulling each of the students aside for letter Q practice- they had no problems with this letter.
Our star helped with circle time and reviewing our colors and shapes. We practiced counting to 30 again running fast like a quail, Spanish to 11 and blastoff counting. This week’s letter is Q and we learned that Q has a friend- the letter U- we rarely see them not together. I have a song that I had the kids listen to so they could hear the sound and different words that “Qu” are in. It is a fun lively song and many of the students jammed along. We met Queen Quintella and her beautiful quilts. I read some words that start with Q but that list was very short. After we practiced the sign and sound of Q, we wiggled, ate snacks and did show and tell.
For class time, we learned about different places you can work with a story about a Oz the postman going throughout the town. We learned about the post office, police station, banks, bakeries, hospitals, construction areas and office buildings-stopping to discuss each job and place to work. I then asked where each child’s parents work and then asked where they would like to work when they grow up.
To review construction jobs, we did a tool patterning page. Each child cut and then glued each tool that finished the unit. Afterwards, I had a kitchen tools worksheet in different sizes to coordinate with working at a bakery. My goal was to teach the student how to compare sizes and put them in order from smallest to tallest. We had a hard time with this so this would be a great thing to work with your child on- which one it taller or which one is shorter. Give them a few things to compare and allow them to learn hands on.
For Q time, we sang to our “QU” song and reviewed the sound of the letter Q. Each child colored their Q page- Quail on a Quilt. I sent Q homework home and a Q page to color and finish the quilt with a variety of colors. I stamped their hand with Q and practiced the sound with each child and we were done.
